Summer, 2021
Growing Forward
Now that our Graduation celebrations have passed, we are well into our Summer Boost Program, preparing our students for the upcoming school year. We enourage you to do your part at home as well and take advantage of the local summer reading programs at the Chicago Public Libraries. “Make Summer Yours” is the theme for the Summer Learning Challenge for this year. This program is helping parents over coming learning loss after one of the most challenging school years. To learn more, visit chipublib.org/summer.
Here are some tips for parents to help your student to read more:
- Be a good role model for reading.
- Encourage reading at home
- Keep a variety of reading at home
- Encourage your child to practice reading out loud
- Write notes for your child to read
- Encourage activities that require reading
- Establish a consistent reading time even if it is only 10-15 minutes
- Restrict TV and Electronics/Video Games
- Visit the Library once per week
- Work in partnership with your child’s school and teachers
Community Outreach
Thank you all to who made our Neighborhood Playdate a sucess! We had the University of Chicago present offering health and safety information, the Lutheran Church Charities K9 Comfort Ministry Team, Loyola University administering COVID 19 Vaccines, Free Hair Cuts and Snow Cones. It was great to reach out to the community again after more than one year of limited events.
